Long-term care in the United States and the UK is suffering a fatal contraction of both supply and demand. These important sectors were in very serious shape in the“before times” (prior to the pandemic) and are now enduring the most severe contractions ever of both supply and demand.

In both the US and the UK, the immediate future is grim. For many nursing centers in the US, especially those caring for some of the poorest and most vulnerable in rural areas, the end is closures, which have already started. This fatal contraction in long-term care comes at a time when we haven’t yet hit the peak demand years among the Baby Boom generation, the oldest of which will only reach 80 in 2025 and 85 in 2030. From 2030 through 2039 ~40 million in the US and ~9.5 million in the UK will survive to their 80s and need care! Who and what will be left to look after their needs?

More than a social care and equity issue, this is an enormously important economic issue, as adult children will shoulder the growing burden of care from 2030 – 2039 for which resources outside the home may be unavailable.
