As travel markets start to thaw from a deep freeze; what about health tourism?
Consumers are uncertain about travel and travelling into and out of many destinations remains difficult.
However, consumers have started traveling; what can we do to encourage them to consider health, dental and medical services? Demand is pent up, and as the travel markets begin to thaw, what can we expect?
Among healthcare systems, now that the immediate challenges of the pandemic have passed, how difficult will it be to resume elective and ambulatory procedures? For resorts, spas and other operators focused on the wellness markets, will they be able to resume “normal” business?
How can health tourism providers and destination management organizations plan for the future?
- Will medical tourism ever “return to normal”?
- While travel is resuming, how can providers and destinations prepare for business activity in the health, wellness, dental & medical tourism markets?
- Which travellers will return? What will be their concerns, and what services will they seek?
- Which segments of these markets will return first?

What We Will Talk About
Defining the Issue
Regional demand in the markets for health & wellness tourism was growing before the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 forced the transportation shutdown.
Now that some commercial airline activities returning, the impact of this on health tourism markets by segment will be reviewed.
On the supply side, providers and destinations were marketing aggressively to attract health & wellness, motivated travelers. Now that restrictions on elective procedures have been lifted, the potential return of consumers by service lines will be reviewed.
Both the demand and supply sides of these markets were frozen and are beginning to thaw; correctly anticipating what will happen next will give destinations and providers in advantage.
How the COVID-19 Crisis Has Changed Things
The changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic are affecting both the demand and supply sides of the wellness, health & medical tourism markets. Some segments are affected more severely (for example, the elderly), so providers and destinations that want to attract consumers will need to carefully reconsider how to segment their markets. And providers will have to reconsider how to pivot operations and promotions to meet the elective needs of consumers. And everyone, especially commercial airline carriers and destinations will need to carefully manage perceptions of safety in general, and health & wellness travel, in particular.
