Health spending; up, up and… Down?

Inherited wisdom suggests that demand for medical care occurs regardless of what is happening in the economy, so spending on healthcare should be equally insulated from economic forces. However, as was learned in America during the Great Recession is being borne out elsewhere as well. A recent article in The Economist (http://www.economist.com/news/international/21606314-after-years-painful-cuts-spending-health-care-rising-again-laying-down) suggests that many nations have reduce their healthcare spend in the wake of the global economic downturn, and that these same countries may be emboldened to employ enterprise tools such as competition, access and price negotiation to keep a tight rein on healthcare purse strings.

What’s your opinion – can healthcare costs the moderated?

Are healthcare costs moderating, and will this impact international medical travel (medical tourism)?
