Economic growth in Malaysia was the primary motivation for Ms. Sherene Azura Azli, CEO of the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council ,(MHTC), to enter the world of medical tourism. The change was not planned. Prior to being appointed CEO of MHTC in March 2015, she led the Malaysian Diaspora Outreach team at Talent Corp, under Malaysia’s Prime Minister to recruit and train individuals with talents in line with the needs of Malaysia’s growing, dynamic economy.

At Talent Corp she helped develop human assets within the healthcare sector, seeking healthcare specialists to fill gaps in certain areas of Malaysia’s talent pool. Ms. Sherene’s search for medical talent included the worldwide diaspora of Malaysian healthcare professionals.

“All of the Malaysian’s that have been studying in different countries and been practicing there as consultants have different experiences and areas of specialty. We saw them as assets to Malaysia. Many of them have returned and the others have been contributing to Malaysia’s healthcare growth from wherever they are in different areas. That inspired me to get deeper into the healthcare industry,” says Ms. Sherene.

Established under the Ministry of Health, The Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council, MHTC, is a government agency focused on positioning Malaysia as a premiere medical travel destination in Asia. MHTC is a liaison between the private and public sectors fostering coordination and cooperation to deliver a seamless and satisfactory patient & family experience.

With more than 250 private hospitals in Malaysia, MHTC members are carefully assessed for the quality of care they deliver. The strict criteria for MHTC membership assures world class medical services for every patient, not only international medical travelers, with clinical, as well as patient services among the metrics being monitored.

The growth of Malaysia as a medical travel destination has coincided with the economic transformation program in the country, focusing on twelve different sectors, one of which is healthcare. MHTC is striving to improve the medical tourism industry with new talent and working to harmonize both the private and public healthcare sectors. And the dynamic growth in other sectors within Malaysia provides infrastructure and services which contribute to the patient and tourist experience.
